Despite the drizzling rain in the morning, the second annual “Triad Spring Concert” started as scheduled at the beautiful Coquitlam Centre Park, thanks to the careful preparation by volunteers and last year’s overwhelmingly positive response to the concert. The gentle rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of the performers, but rather added a touch of poetry to the concert, which was a blend of love, culture and generational heritage.
This meadow concert was not only a feast of music, but also a vivid manifestation of the cultural spirit of the Tri-Community. The performance was warmly opened by the TCCS anthem, “Chuan Yu’s Love”. This anthem, composed by ourselves, has a melodious melody and lyrics full of love and praise for all ethnic groups, as if it sprinkled beams of sunshine in the rain, naturally bringing the audience into a space full of warmth and hope. As the lyrics sing;

Beyond the boundless blue
Everlastingly in your reverie

Across the seamless seas
Madness in your mind

It is worth mentioning that many of the volunteers who participated in the concert are actually the youngest group of volunteers in TCCS – they spend most of their time performing in elderly homes, using music to build up a deep emotional connection with the elders. The Concert on the Lawn was a rare opportunity for them to “get out of the home” and perform in public. They sang and played the piano in the drizzle, presenting a unique world of childlike innocence, and letting people feel the silent resonance between generations.
In addition to the vitality of the younger generation, this concert also features a number of elderly lovers of Chinese music, many of whom have long studied traditional Chinese instruments such as the flute, yangqin, erhu, zhongruan, sheng, etc., and who have a deep understanding of and affection for Chinese music. Their performances were not only skillful, but also rich in emotional thickness, making the traditional rhythms echo in the spring rain and touching the hearts of the people. The fact that they performed with the children on the same stage is a manifestation of cultural inheritance and continuity.
The performance also incorporated multicultural elements. For example, the children sang a gentle and touching French song, showing a beautiful picture of Canada’s cultural diversity. At the end of the performance, all the performers and the audience sang the Canadian national anthem “O Canada” together, creating an atmosphere of unity, tolerance and hope in the drizzling rain, which was very touching.
The team of presenters is also one of the highlights that we are proud of. All of them came from the team of youth volunteers usually trained at TCCS, and one of the youngest presenters was even in the fourth grade! With childlike voices, they earnestly strung together each program in both Chinese and English, demonstrating not only their excellent expressive skills, but also the careful cultivation of and trust in the abilities of young people in the TCCS community.
As the concert drew to a close, we were joined by Federal Member of Parliament Ron McKinnon and MPP Jodie Wickens, Director of the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development, who gave a warm speech recognizing the multicultural spirit and community cohesion of the concert and thanking all the performers and volunteers. Although the weather was not perfect, it was the rain that made us cherish every persistence and passion on and off the stage. In the audience, there were bursts of applause and laughter from time to time. The music and love in the rain, like a trickle of water, nourished the hearts of everyone present.
