Rena Lau

Building Bridges and Listening to Community Voices | TCCS Hosts 2026 BC Provincial Election Candidates Forum for the Chinese Community
13 candidates gather in Coquitlam as livestreaming brings election information to more residents, with conversations continuing after the event
On the morning of October 11, 2026, the Tri-City Chinese Community Society (TCCS) successfully hosted the 2026 BC Provincial Election Candidates Forum for the Chinese Community at Coquitlam Centre Library. Thirteen candidates representing different political parties and independent campaigns attended the event, meeting face-to-face with members of the Chinese community to introduce their platforms and discuss issues of community concern.
The event attracted active participation from residents in attendance. A livestream also allowed people who could not attend in person to access election information and learn more about the candidates. Even after the formal meeting ended, many residents remained outside the venue to continue speaking with candidates and asking questions. The conversations continued in a lively and welcoming atmosphere.
The event provided candidates with an opportunity to introduce themselves while giving residents a chance to express their views, learn about different political positions, and engage directly with those seeking public office. It also reflected TCCS’s ongoing commitment to community service and public participation.

2. Livestreaming Makes Election Information More Accessible
Access to information is essential to meaningful participation in community and public affairs.
By arranging a livestream, TCCS sought to extend the reach of the forum beyond the physical venue and make election information accessible to more residents.
For some Chinese-speaking residents, opportunities to meet provincial election candidates directly can be limited. Events like this provide a more accessible way to learn about the candidates, understand their priorities, and hear their perspectives on community development, public services, and issues affecting residents’ daily lives.
The active participation of residents demonstrated the community’s interest in election information and opportunities for direct public engagement.
3. Conversations Continued After the Forum
One particularly meaningful aspect of the event was that communication did not end when the formal meeting concluded.
Many residents stayed outside the venue to continue conversations with candidates and ask questions about matters important to them.
Their participation showed that residents want more than introductory speeches. They want opportunities to speak directly with candidates, understand their positions, and gain the information they need before making their voting decisions.
Face-to-face conversations allow candidates to hear residents’ concerns firsthand while giving community members a better understanding of the people seeking to represent them.
The value of a candidates forum is not measured only by the number of candidates who attend. It also lies in whether the event creates genuine opportunities for dialogue and ensures that community voices have a chance to be heard.
4. Building Bridges Between the Community and Public Affairs
TCCS Chair Rena Lau emphasized that the society is a non-profit, non-partisan community organization dedicated to serving Tri-Cities residents and strengthening connections within the community.
She hopes TCCS can serve as a bridge between candidates and residents, creating opportunities for people from different backgrounds and with different perspectives to communicate openly.
For TCCS, community service extends beyond cultural celebrations, senior care visits, and youth volunteer programs. It also means creating opportunities for residents to participate in public affairs and become more informed about the decisions that affect their lives.
By organizing this candidates forum, TCCS aimed to bring election information closer to the community, make it easier for residents to learn about the candidates, and give candidates an opportunity to hear directly from the people they hope to represent.
TCCS maintains a strictly non-partisan position and does not endorse any political party or candidate. Its goal is to provide a fair platform for dialogue, help residents understand different perspectives, and support their ability to make independent and informed choices.
5. Continuing to Serve the Community and Encourage Civic Participation
From cultural events and senior outreach to youth volunteer initiatives and public affairs forums, TCCS continues to respond to community needs through practical action.
The 2026 BC Provincial Election Candidates Forum was another step in the society’s ongoing efforts to encourage community participation in public affairs.
The attendance of 13 candidates, the active involvement of residents, the livestream, and the conversations that continued after the meeting all contributed to the significance of this event.
TCCS hopes the forum will encourage more residents to follow the provincial election, learn about candidates and their policies, and make informed and thoughtful decisions when voting.
The society sincerely thanks all the candidates who attended and supported the event, as well as the TCCS board members, volunteers, and every community member who participated. Their collective efforts helped make this cross-party exchange possible.
When different voices have the opportunity to be heard, the distance between the community and public affairs becomes smaller.
TCCS will continue to uphold its non-profit and non-partisan principles, remain rooted in the community, and build bridges between residents and public institutions. Through continued service and engagement, the society hopes to help create a more welcoming, active, and connected Tri-Cities community.
